My family and I recently hiked the Blue Ridge tunnel through Afton Mountain near Crozet Virginia. We started from the eastern side of the tunnel near Crozet, but you can also start from the western side near Waynesboro. There is a nice parking area, though it was completely full when we visited on a Saturday afternoon in December. So do yourself a favor and try to do the hike during the week. The tunnel itself is about one mile long, but you need to hike about a half a mile to get to the tunnel. Here’s a map to help you find the trailhead and some pictures of the trail.
Sign reminding you to bring a flashlight. The trail is wide and smooth . There are interpretive signs along the way… and plaques… and mile markers. Entrance to the tunnel. You can see the light from the other entrance. 
Yes it really is dark in the tunnel so bring a light.
